Fellowship Opportunity | What the Ocean Knows – Storytelling for Circular Plastic and Beach Clean 2.0
Beach Clean 2.0 is exploring marine plastics and their movement from beach waste into items of use. This fellowship would create an artistic record of that journey and help communicate the circular-plastic story through creative practice.
The Fellow will explore creative methods such as illustration, art, film or photography to tell the story of marine plastics and their conversion from waste to items of use through Beach Clean 2.0. The work should connect the beach, the material and the process of transformation. The fellowship connects to the Beach Clean 2.0 and Architects of Change educational tools project, which aims to design learning materials for primary and post-primary children to explore environmental topics. The Fellow will design artistic outputs of pedagogical value intended for school children (key stages and age groups to be discussed).
Required Skills & Experience
The Fellow must be able to communicate complex environmental issues via creative forms to an audience of school children of different ages. They will have an understanding of pedagogy as well as environmental topics, in particular ocean health and plastic pollution. If working directly with children, they will require basic ACCESS NI authorisation. The Fellow should be intuitive and creative, with excellent communication skills, a track record of working with young people and demonstrate the ability to deliver creative, thematic outputs in time and complete.
Potential Outcomes
Applicants are encouraged to propose outcomes that reflect their creative approach and the focus of their fellowship. These will incorporate:
- A creative public-facing interpretation of the Beach Clean 2.0 plastic journey.
- An artistic record of marine plastic moving from waste to reuse.
- Outputs in one or more appropriate forms, potentially including illustration, exhibition, film or photography.
All outputs should be aimed at school-aged children as the key target audience and include pedagogical elements.
Fellowship Value
The Fellowship will be offered up to £10,000 and applicants will be required to provide a full breakdown of costs. Eligible costs include the Fellow’s time, consumables or materials, travel, accommodation and subsistence. Equipment costs are ineligible. Costs associated with Studentships or PhD study are ineligible. Applicants should indicate the funding amount requested. The evaluation panel may recommend a different amount based on the proposal content and budget justification.
